How to Choose

What to Look for in a Catholic Therapist

Not all therapists who call themselves "Christian" or "Catholic" approach therapy the same way. Here's what to look for โ€” and ask about โ€” when finding the right fit.

01
Licensed & Credentialed
Always verify that a therapist holds a valid state license (LPC, LCSW, PsyD, PhD, LMFT). Faith integration does not substitute for professional training.
02
Ask About Their Approach
Ask directly: "How do you integrate your faith into your work?" Good answers describe specific methods. Red flags: vague answers or dismissing the question.
03
Faithful to Church Teaching
A Catholic therapist should work within โ€” not against โ€” Church teaching on human sexuality, marriage, and dignity. Ask if needed.
04
The Right Fit Takes Time
It sometimes takes 2โ€“3 therapists before finding the right match. This is normal and does not mean therapy doesn't work. Trust the process.
05
Telehealth is Real Therapy
Telehealth therapy is as effective as in-person for most conditions. It dramatically expands your options, especially in areas with few Catholic therapists.
06
Prayer + Therapy Together
Spiritual direction and therapy are complementary, not competing. Many Catholics benefit from both simultaneously โ€” a therapist for the mind, a director for the soul.
